PROJECT GOODWILL

Goodwill Industries of the Columbia hosted the 4 Annual Project Goodwill event on Thursday, May 3rd at the Gjerde Center at Columbia Basin College. Eight teams from local schools DECA and FCCLA clubs participated in the annual event, designing, developing and modeling, three outfits based on their musical theme.

Students spend months working on selecting the right music and creating amazing outfits. This years three categories were: Book-It - an outfit made from books, magazines or other paper materials; Re-Mix It - an outfit made out of items in a "donation box" provided by Goodwill, where students had to use a piece of every item in the box and a piece of the box, and; Mash-It Up - an outfit designed to go with the selected music.

All of the teams were extremely creative with fun and amazing talent displayed in their outfits. The Kennewick HS DECA team took the top honors, winning the Best Overall category and $600.00.

Students from the Photography 3-4 class at Southridge High School are having as Art Show & Silent Auction at You & I Framing in downtown Kennewick. On Friday, April 27th, from 6-9 p.m., photos careated by SHS students will be auctioned off. All auction proceeds will benefit World Relief Tri Cities.

Goods Made Good

In partnership with Goodwill, students in Fiber Arts classes at Kamiakin, Kennewick and Southridge High School are reusing, recycling and redesigning "old" clothing and textile goods into "new" fashions and products.

Students participated in a tour of the Pasco Goodwill store and warehouse, learning about the mission and focus of their local Goodwill stores.

The students were provided the opportunity to select merchandise that did not sell and was being sorted to be shipped out for recycling. The students developed their own designs and patterns and began to create! As projects are completed, we'll share the "before" and "after" creations!

Kennewick HS ASL Students Attend "See What I'm Saying"

Suzanne Benfield, ASL instructor at Kennewick High School, and her students attended a screening of the documentary, See What I'm Saying, as well as performances by two local Deaf ASL teachers and two performers from the film.

The screening was held on May 20-21 at the Stanford Theater in Tiger Wood Center, Nike World Headquarter, Beaverton, Oregon and was sponsored by NWASLTA.

Kennewick High Wins Best Overall in Project Goodwill

Congratulations to Kennewick High School's Marketing & Management and DECA students who competed in Project Goodwill on Wednesday night, winning the Best Overall category and the Best Donation Box outfit, winning a total of $700 for their DECA Chapter.

The Goodwill Industries sponsored event, Project Goodwill, is an opportunity for area high school students to showcase their creativity and compete for awards and prize money based on the creation of three outfits in specified categories.

Students designed and created outfits in three categories; Devine Demin, Donation Box, and Literacy. Additional prizes were given for Best Portfolio, Peoples Choice, and Best Marketing Plan as well as the Best Overall category.

The Devine Denim outfit was modeled by Ryley Dennis and created and designed by Katey Richins and Blair Westerman. The Donation Box outfit is an outfit made from items contained in a donation box provided by Goodwill. The outfit must contain a piece from each item in the box....even if it is not an apparel item. The Donation Box outfit was created and designed by Deborah Ramirez and modeled by Yuleni Martinez. The Literacy outfit was constructed entirely from books and magazines. Alex Simons modeled the dress and also created and designed the dress along with Michelle Meehan, Paul Martinez and Casey Brush.

Jose Magana and Fernando Ayala were MC's for the fashion show.

On Feburary 25th, students from Mr. Quesnell's drafting classes, Mr Long's Computer Science classes and Mr. Nett's math classes participated in the annual high school engineering competition as part of National Engineers Week, February 1-25. The competition was part of the Discover Engineering competitions, sponsored by Hanford Engineering Contractors. Students from eight area high schools participated as teams of 3-4 students with a total of 63 teams and 250 participants. The event was held at Pasco High School.

Southridge FEA Celebrate Dr. Suess's Birthday!!

In celebration of Dr. Suess's Birthday and Read Across America week, SHS FEA students hosted a storytelling with children event. The activities included storytelling, making Dr. Suess finger puppets, decorating green eggs, and flower making. The young guests received coloring books, Dr. Suess hats, a participation certificate, book marks and pencils. The entire event focused on Dr. Suess and the importance of reading!

Students in Mrs. Willingham's Child Psychology classes have been busy this year in our community. So far this school year, the 66 students have logged over 710 hours of volunteer time working with children and the elderly! Congratulations! That is an amazing number of volunteer hours.

Students in the Kamiakin Chapter of FCCLA hosted a Valentine's Day Celebration with the residents at the Royal Columbian Retirement facility. They took cookies and puch and made a sachet craft with the residents. The residents loved having the students spend time with them and one resident even gave students hats that she had knited. The students loved the gifts!

At the Regional Competition held on February 15th, students placed in three events. In the Food Innovations and Recycle and Redesign events, students placed GOLD. KeHS Technology

Students in Mr. Giancola's Material Science Technology (MST) and Construction Technology classes are pictured here.

In Construction, the student is drawing wire and demonstrating how metal can stretch. Students collect data on diameter and length and create a graph from the information collected.

An MST student has created a ring from a drawing and is designing it into wax using a Dremel tool. She created the ring from her own design and will cast it into metal.

67 Kamiakin Students Receive Top Honors at Area DECA Competition!

67 students are returning to Kamiakin with regional accolades in 21 different competitive events. Kamiakin DECA students received 15 first place prizes. the competitive events are aimed at student's career interests. This included taking a comprehensive test, followed by role playing events where students must demonstrate marketing proficiencies before judges. The students are eligible to compete at the State DECA Conference in Bellevue, WA, in March.

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! The Kennewick Career & Technical Education programs are looking for business and community members to serve on their Advsiory Committees. Advisory committees support specific programs and members provide valuable input and advise in the ongoing development of programs.

Members provide a variety of support activities including: reviewing curriculum and making recommendations for curriculum adoption; participating in classroom presentations; judging at student leadership events; reviewing new courses and updating current course frameworks; and assisting in the ongoing planning and development of programs.

Programs include: Agriculture, Business and Marketing, Family & Consumer Sciences, Photography, American Sign Language, Technology and Engineering, Drafting, Health Occupations and Sports Medicine, and Careers In Education.

Kennewick HS DECA members Shelbi Wood, Katia Johnson, and Hayley Self attended the annual DECA International Career Development Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, April 24th to 27th. Shelbi and Hayley participated in the Leadership Development Academy, where they learned about working effectively in teams and strategies for making KHS DECA a stronger chapter. As an incoming State Officer, Katia participate in LEAD, which helped to prepare her for her duties as the Area 6 DECA President for the 2010-2011 school year.

Photography students from Tri City area high schools competed in a photo contest judged by photography professionals from the Area-Wide Photography Advisory Committee. The categories were: People, Places, and Things. Student could enter photos at either the basic editing or advanced editing level.

Over 75 Kennewick High School DECA Members competed at this year’s Area VI DECA Conference on January 29, 2010. This year’s conference was held at the Tri-Cities Convention Center and was judged by volunteers from the local business community. In order to compete, all students were required to take a 100 question, timed exam, as well as present a role play to the judges.

Kamiakin Food and Fitness Students Learn About Healthy Snacks

Kamiakin Food and Fitness class ended the semester by reviewing healthy snacks with Sam Shick, district Food Service Director. This two day event began with a discussion on reading food labels, proper portion size, nutrition dense foods (eating around the rainbow), daily caloric needs and planning a healthy and convenient snack. Day two was preparation and judging day. The students went right to work and prepared their snacks for judging.

The teams of students prepared a presentation plate and enough small samples for everyone in the class to have a taste. The competition was close with two judges tied and the third judge determining a winner by only 3 points. Comments from the students included, “It was fun” and “couldn’t have been better.” “I enjoyed the experience very much” supported the success of the students! We will invite Sam - The Food Dude - back next semester.

ASL Student Host Party for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children

Kennewick High School first and second year American Sign Language students planned and implemented a Christmas party for local deaf and hard of hearing children and their families last month. Activities for the kids included cookie decorating, face painting, craft projects, and a bouncy castle.

Students provided refreshments and games that all ages could enjoy. Tabitha Troutman was the signing Santa and Jacob Miller, Nicole Killinger, and Nikki Slate were Santa’s helpers. The event took place at Pasco First Christian Church and Pasco Jaycees generously donated gifts for Santa to give the children.

Kamiakin FFA Students Meet Congressman Doc Hastings

The Annual Pasco Agriculture and Trade Show was held at TRAC January 5th and 6th. Its purpose is to inform individuals in the agricultural community about the newest federal and state policies related to agriculture and how those policies will affect farmers in our area. It is also an avenue to distribute information about new techniques that are being used to improve efficiency of operation and address environmental concerns.

A series of guest speakers participated, including Congressman Doc Hastings as a key presenter. The Congressman discussed the new administration’s stance on the removal of the Columbia and Snake River dams and what his office was doing to prevent that from happening.

Kamiakin Agriculture and FFA students were invited to participate and have a booth where they could showcase the different projects they are working on at school. Both individual projects and FFA projects at Kamiakin were showcased. Students presented their program of activities for National Chapter (FFA). The students created three Tri-fold posters, one for each of the three development areas and then listed and had pictures of all the projects that we do within the chapter. Samples of different projects were shared representing metal art, centerpieces, and our stuffed fish (used in the teaching program) which was displayed on the table in front of the posters.

Kamiakin Students Earn 1st Place in International Competition

Three Kamiakin DECA students have successfully taken on international competition in a business simulation called Virtual Business. These students placed 1st in the Virtual Business H&R Block Personal Finance challenge by testing their skills at managing their personal financial wealth. They also placed 2nd in the Virtual Business Retailing Challenge by testing their skills at managing a retail convenience store. The students had to make marketing decisions as well as many personal finance decisions and upload their scores to compete against others in the region as well as the nation. Team “Minority Report”, which consists of Taran Patel, Brandon En’Wezoh and Ronish (Billy) Sharma, competed against thousands of teams spending many hours running their simulation as precisely as possible.

The next step for these enterprising students is to compete against other top teams from around the world in a round robin format tournament at the International Career and Development Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Team Minority Report will be competing for cash and scholarship opportunities for up to $50,000 as well as shadowing an H&R Block executive. In addition, the top three teams will receive a $2,500 classroom grant for their school.

CORE 24 - Proposed State Graduation Requirements

The State Board of Education has been working on new state graduation requirments known as CORE 24. The “core” of CORE 24 is a set of graduation requirements that the Board believes will prepare students intentionally for whatever option they choose after high school.
CORE 24 represents the essential high school graduation requirements all students should have to prepare for life after high school.

CORE 24 is based on the following principles:
1) Equip everyone: Prepare ALL students for life after high school—in gainful employment, an apprenticeship or postsecondary education.
2) Expect more: Align requirements to meet the increased expectations of the 21st century workforce.
3) Provide flexibility: Allow students to customize their education, creating relevance to their interests.
4) Give focus: Encourage students to align course work to achieve their future career goals.
5) Plan ahead: Emphasize the High School and Beyond Plan to offer students personalized guidance to prepare them for work, postsecondary education, or both.
6) Start early: Prepare students to enter highschool and create opportunities to meet high school graduation requirements in middle school.

Under CORE 24, all students would be enrolled automatically in college and career ready courses that would keep all postsecondary college and career options open unless they chose to pursue a college emphasis or a career emphasis only.
